The smoothbore shotgun remains one of the most effective tools in the modern defensive landscape, yet it is often burdened by technical misconceptions. Managing a shotgun—whether pump-action or semi-automatic—in defensive scenarios requires a level of proficiency that transcends simple mechanical familiarity.
This intensive course is structured to transform foundational knowledge into real-world operational capability, bridging the gap between academic handling and practical application under stress. The curriculum optimizes manipulation techniques and tactical loading protocols, consolidating muscle memory through live-fire drills designed to develop the defensive mindset necessary to neutralize threats rapidly, reliably, and consciously.
Experience Requirements
This is an Advanced Level module.
- Prerequisites: Successful completion of the Shotgun MID course.
- Licensing: Possession of a valid Personal Firearms License.
- Required Competencies: The student must demonstrate absolute mastery of safe handling (loading, firing, clearing) of the shotgun and proven proficiency in drawing and recovering their handgun from a holster.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the operator will have acquired the skills necessary to:
- Advanced Manipulation: Master emergency reloads, tactical reloads, status checks, and rapid transitions.
- Ready Positions: Optimize reaction times and target engagement through the correct use of administrative and tactical ready positions.
- Legal Framework: Deepen understanding of the principles of self-defense and the proportionate use of force.
- Weapon Transitions: Safely execute the transition from the long gun (primary) to the handgun (secondary) during mechanical failures or ammunition depletion.
- Applied Ballistics: Manage shot patterns and precision of various ammunition types across variable distances.
- Situational Awareness: Implement communication protocols and environmental scanning.
- Stoppages & Malfunctions: Effectively clear mechanical interruptions under pressure.
- Dynamic & Tactical Shooting: Coordinate biomechanical movement with fire delivery and utilize ballistic cover effectively.
