Basic Pistol Course (8 Hours)

This course is the ideal solution for novice shooters and anyone seeking to establish a solid technical foundation in the use of handguns. The curriculum introduces students to the fundamental knowledge and operational skills necessary for the safe handling, loading, employment, and clearing of primary semi-automatic weapon systems. The training alternates between theoretical classroom sessions and practical range drills, ensuring an optimal learning experience within a professional, stimulating, and strictly controlled environment.


Prerequisites

  • Licensing: Possession of a valid Personal Firearms License.
  • Vetting: Background checks are mandatory, unless the student is a sworn Law Enforcement Officer, Corrections Officer, Licensed Private Security, or Military personnel.

Learning Objectives & Outcomes

  • Upon successful completion of the course, participants will have acquired the skills necessary to:
  • Home Safety & Prevention: Implement rigorous protocols for the storage and securing of firearms, with a specific focus on preventing unauthorized access by minors or untrained personnel.
  • Ammunition Management: Correctly identify, select, and store ammunition, ensuring maximum safety during handling.
  • Legal Framework: Navigate current legislation regarding the purchase, possession, transport, and carrying of firearms and ammunition.
  • Mechanics & Operation: Analyze and describe the mechanical cycle of operation for semi-automatic pistols.
  • Operational Manipulation: Demonstrate mastery of safe handling procedures, including loading, unloading, and chamber checks (Status Checks).
  • Marksmanship Fundamentals: Apply core pillars (stance, sight picture, trigger management) for the effective and safe employment of the pistol.
  • Technical Maintenance: Correctly perform field stripping, cleaning, lubrication, and functional checks.

Required Equipment & Technical Gear

  1. Authorized Weapon Systems
    • Type: High-quality, reliable centerfire semi-automatic pistols only.
    • Frame Size: Full-size or Compact configurations are permitted.
    • Permitted Calibers: .380 ACP, 9mm, .357 SIG, .40 S&W, or .45 ACP.
    • Restrictions: Revolvers and .22 caliber (rimfire) firearms are not allowed. “Micro-pistols” and pocket platforms (e.g., Glock 42/43, M&P Shield, etc.) are strictly excluded.
  2. Carry Systems & Duty Gear
    • Holster: Must be an Outside-the-Waistband (OWB) type, mounted on the dominant side and securely fastened to the belt.
    • Safety Standards: The holster must be rigid (non-collapsible), fully enclose the trigger guard, and allow for one-handed drawing and re-holstering. Trigger-finger actuated retention systems (e.g., Serpa style) are prohibited.
    • Accessories: At least one belt-mounted magazine pouch (single or double) is required.
      Compliance: Equipment is subject to the final discretion of the staff. Exceptions are granted only for official Agency/Department Duty Gear.
  3. PPE & Apparel
    • Protection: Certified impact-resistant ballistic eyewear and hearing protection (active electronic earmuffs are highly recommended).
    • Clothing: Durable long pants with functional belt loops, a 1.5″ (3.8 cm) rigid tactical belt, and closed-toe footwear with non-slip soles.
    • Thermal Protection: Crew-neck or button-down shirts (avoid low-cut necklines to protect against hot brass casings).
    • Logistics: Individual hydration system, knee pads, and tactical gloves are recommended
    • Body Armor: Optional unless required by your agency during firearms training

Ammunition Specifications

  • Estimated Round Count: 200 rounds.
  • Mandatory Type: Only FRANGIBLE, lead-core (for steel), non-toxic ammunition.
  • Prohibitions: Green Tip, Brown Tip, Armor Piercing (AP), or surrogate rounds.
  • Absolutely no reloaded or remanufactured ammunition.
  • Procurement: Must be purchased exclusively from OS ACADEMY.
